The short answer
Both instruments are played intuitively without musical training. The main differences are price, sound character, and size.
Tongue Drum
- Price: €650–800 at TERRASTRA
- Sound: Warm, gentle, shorter sustain than handpan

- Playing: with hands or soft mallets
- Perfect for: beginners, travel, home practice, meditation
Handpan
- Price: €1600–2500 at TERRASTRA
- Sound: Deeper, more resonant, longer sustain
- Size: Larger (44cm diameter)
- Playing: with fingertips and a light touch
- Perfect for: serious practice, sound healing sessions, performance
How they feel to play
A tongue drum is forgiving: each tongue gives one clear note and it is hard to make it sound bad. A handpan responds to the lightness of your touch, so the same note can be soft, bright or percussive. That gives more expression, and it also means a little more time to find your sound.
Our recommendation
If budget is a concern or you're just starting out, start with a tongue drum. If you're committed to sound healing or performance, a handpan is the long-term investment.
