Why a handpan is not cheap
A handpan is shaped and tuned by hand. Every note is hammered into the steel and tuned so that it rings clearly together with its overtones. That takes many hours of skilled work, which is the main part of the price.
What changes the price
- Number of notes. An 8+1 or 9+1 layout costs less than a 12+3 with extra bass notes around the bottom.
- Scale. Popular scales are easier to find; rarer or more complex scales can cost more.
- Tuning quality. Clean, stable notes with a long sustain are what you pay for in a good instrument.
- What is included. A proper protective case matters for travel and shipping.
Prices at TERRASTRA
Our handpans range from €1 600 (F Low Pugmi 8+1) to €2 500 (C Amara 12+3). Every one of them has a real recording on its page, so you can compare the sound before you compare the price. Mention code TERRASTRA10 for 10% off.
How to spend wisely
- For a first handpan, a 9+1 layout in a friendly scale like D Kurd or D Celtic gives you everything you need.
- Choose by sound, not by the number of notes. Listen with headphones.
- If the budget is tight, a tongue drum is a good way to start and costs much less.
