Why a handpan needs care

A handpan is tuned steel. Moisture and the salt from your hands can cause rust, and strong impacts or heat can move the tuning. The good news: a few minutes of care after playing is usually enough.

After every session

  • Wipe the whole surface with a dry, clean microfiber cloth, including the rim and the underside.
  • Play with clean, dry hands. Hand cream and sweat leave marks that attract moisture.

Protect the surface

Every few weeks, or when the surface starts to look dull, apply a thin layer of a protective product made for handpans or steel instruments, then wipe off the excess. It creates a barrier against moisture. If you live by the sea, as we do in Valencia, do it more often.

Storage

  • Keep the handpan in its case or on a stand, away from direct sun and radiators.
  • Avoid damp rooms and never leave it wet inside a closed case.
  • Do not stack heavy things on it.

Travel

  • Always travel with a padded hard or semi-hard case.
  • Never leave it in a car in the sun: high temperatures can affect the tuning.
  • On flights, take it as cabin baggage when possible.

Playing

Play with your fingertips and a light touch. A handpan does not need force, and hard hits are one of the main reasons instruments go out of tune. If something starts to sound wrong, write to us in Telegram and we will advise what to do.
